Balaclava – Brown & Cream

Coffee with the milk just poured, before anyone stirs. Deep brown holds the ground and tan squares step across it in rings from a pale centre, a palette that feels like a bookshop on a wet afternoon. Nothing about it is loud, and that is its pull: it sits with camel coats, oatmeal scarves, old leather boots. The balaclava curves over the crown and falls down the neck, open at the face with a tidy crocheted border, close and warm without bulk. Women artisans work it panel by panel, and the brown and tan meet along a slightly different line each time.
